Bulletproof coffee in its purest form is butter in coffee—that’s it. Of course, many recipes have built on this simple foundation to include other ingredients like mct oil, cinnamon, salt, and even sugar in some cases. In general, we think it is fair game to call any recipe that calls for butter “bulletproof coffee. ”so why put butter in your coffee, you ask? to the uninitiated, butter in coffee seems like something that would happen by accident at an overly crowded breakfast table. But, for those in the know, it’s a familiar staple in keto diets. The main idea behind keto diets is to consume higher amounts of fat and reduce carbohydrate intake to induce a fat-burning state called ketogenesis.
Adding cinnamon to your morning cup can help reduce hyperglycemia, increase fat burning, and decrease inflammation (3). All of these are incredibly beneficial to speed up your metabolism and help with weight loss. Cinnamon is a great addition to any herbal, green, or black tea, as well as coffee. In one recent study, when researchers added cinnamaldehyde—the phytonutrient responsible for cinnamon’s spicy taste and smell—to human fat cells (called adipocytes), the fat cells began making genes and enzymes to increase fat metabolism (4). An increase in fat metabolism means your cells will burn instead of store extra fat. Better fat burning = easier weight loss!.
Mixing up proffee couldn't be any easier — all you need are two ingredients to start. And yet the recipe is easy to customize to whatever flavors your craving. To make basic proffee: to hot coffee, add ¼ cup low-sugar protein powder. To iced coffee or espresso, mix in one low-sugar protein shake. Add spices, cocoa, sugar-free syrup or any healthy extras desired. If using dry spices or protein powder, you can whip in a blender for a smoother consistency. To make mint chocolate proffee: in mug, combine one ready-to-drink chocolate protein shake and 3 tsp. Sugar-free chocolate syrup.
Many people prefer to drink their coffees with particular additions or sides such as sugar, flavoured syrups, whipped cream and/or sweetened or full-cream milk. Although enjoyable, these add on’s are high in sugar and calories, causing coffee to essentially lose its weight loss properties and instead contribute to weight gain. Some effective alternatives to reduce sugar intake with your coffee, whilst still adding flavour, may include incorporating a sprinkle of cinnamon, unsweetened milk alternatives, small amounts of natural sweeteners, a few drops of vanilla extract or melting in a small square of dark chocolate.
If you want to shed excess weight, take your coffee black. The calories quickly tot up as you add in milk, cream, sugar, and syrups. Research published in diabetes care demonstrates a link between sugar-sweetened drinks and obesity. Got a sweet tooth? dr. Vishnumohan has a tip: “you can cut calories by using cinnamon to sweeten your coffee. ”speaking of added calories, resist the urge to add a cake to your coffee order. Try consuming your coffee at home with eggs to keep you feeling full and avoid temptation.
